Held in February, the Verona Marathon is one of the top early-season running events in Italy. In 2010, the event had 1700 finishers in the marathon and 3800 in the half marathon.
Verona is a city of 265,000 people, located in the Veneto region in northern Italy, close to Lake Garda. It's a beautiful city of art and culture, surrounded by wine-growing regions.
The half and the full marathon are both one-loop courses which wind their way through various parts of the city, including the old town centre where runners pass many of Verona's main sights.
Start and finish are on the central Piazza Bra in front of the Arena, the third-largest Roman amphitheatre, used for opera performances in the summer. Shortly before the finish, participants run through the Arena!
The marathon winners 2010 were Kenya's Hillary Mutai (2:17:43) and Ethiopia's Etaferahu Getahun (2:35:43). Geoffrey Gikuni of Kenya (1:02:16) and Mihiret Anamo of Ethiopia (1:13:10) won the 21k.
